Over more than a century now, Allahabad University has always maintained an admired position among India's universities. Established on 23 September 1887, after University of Calcutta, Bombay and Madras, it is India's fourth oldest university. Sir William Muir, then Lt. Governor of United Provinces, owes the credit for conceiving a broad Central College at Allahabad, ultimately to evolve into a University. As a result of his initiative, His Excellency Lord Northbrook laid the founding stone of Muir Central College (named after him) on Dec. 9, 1873.On that occasion, Sir William Muir said: "The establishment of a central college in Allahabad has been my earnest desire ever since I took up my present office. Shortly after I came here, I discovered that there was a strong desire among the chief people of Allahabad for a better means of education; and being deeply impressed with the same conviction, I took part in the first Darbar meeting.
